AI features for candidates — overview
Match score, cover-letter drafting, headline generator — what each one does and how to get the most out of them.
What AI helps with
GreenHired AI gives candidates three inline tools while they apply: an instant match score on every job, a "Draft with AI" cover-letter button in the apply modal, and a profile-headline generator on the profile page. AI never auto-fires — every call is triggered by a click you initiate.
- AI Match Score — sub-300ms, shows on every job listing
- Draft Cover Letter — 3-paragraph personalised letter in the apply modal
- Profile Headline — 3 keyword-rich options on the profile editor
What data AI sees
Before any AI prompt leaves our servers, your name, email and phone are stripped. The model receives only your skills, current role, years of experience, target sectors and (optional) bio. Your resume PDF is never sent.
- Sent: skills, role, years, target sectors, bio
- Stripped: name, email, phone, resume file
- Logged: every call appears in our admin audit log
How to read your match score
The score is a 0-100 estimate of how well your profile fits the job's requirements. We deliberately don't inflate — a low score isn't a rejection, it's a signal. The card lists up to 3 matched skills and 2 gaps so you know exactly where to focus.
- 75+ — strong fit. Worth a personalised application.
- 50-74 — decent fit. Address the gaps in your cover letter.
- 30-49 — stretch. Update your profile first, then re-check.
- Below 30 — long shot. Strengthen specific skills before applying.
The weak-match warning
If your match is below 50% and you click "Draft with AI" in the apply modal, you'll see a warning listing your gaps. You can still draft a letter — but the recommendation is to either update your profile or write a custom letter that directly addresses why you'd still be a fit.
Using the cover-letter draft
The AI cover letter is a strong starting point, not a finished product. Always read it before sending. Personalise the opening sentence to mention something specific about the company. Replace any generic claims with a concrete example from your background.
- 3 paragraphs, max 270 words
- Pulls from your stated skills + bio
- Always edit before submitting
Generating headlines
On /seeker/profile, the "Generate with AI" button next to the headline field gives you 3 options based on your current role, skills and target sectors. Pick whichever feels most like you — or use one as a starting point and tweak the wording.
- Max 15 words each
- Keyword-rich for recruiter search
- Reason shown for each option
If AI isn't responding
AI calls run a primary model with an automatic fallback if it ever fails. If both are unavailable, you'll see a toast — try again in a moment. Your application still goes through without an AI cover letter.
